Antigua and Barbuda highlights its presence at FIT 2024 with new initiatives and developments for 2025
The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority had a prominent presence at the International Tourism Fair (FIT) 2024, where key initiatives were announced that will shape the destination’s development from 2025 onwards. The major opportunities that Antigua and Barbuda will offer to tourism were presented, reaffirming its commitment to luxury, enhanced connectivity, and the preservation of its valuable cultural and natural heritage.
More than 70 agents and operators signed up to learn about the destination’s latest offerings during a training session held on September 30 at the event’s auditorium. Attendees participated in raffles, including a stay courtesy of Royalton Antigua, An Autograph Collection All-Inclusive Resort. Throughout the fair, over 30 meetings were held with operators and representatives from Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru, in addition to the meetings at the stand with major industry players, including airline representatives, reflecting the growing interest in Antigua and Barbuda throughout the Latin American region.
Among the new developments presented by the destination at FIT, the following stood out:
Airports and cruise terminals
Connectivity will be significantly improved with major infrastructure projects:
Barbuda Airport: Scheduled to open on October 3, 2024, this new airport will provide direct access to the island of Barbuda, offering tourists a smoother and more comfortable experience.
V.C. Bird International Airport: Starting in November 2024, the main runway will undergo repaving and expansion, a project that will be completed in December 2025, enhancing the operational capacity of Antigua’s main airport.
New cruise terminal: In October 2024, construction will begin on a new terminal at Heritage Quay, designed to strengthen port facilities and provide an enhanced experience for cruise passengers.
Luxury hotel developments
The hotel sector will also undergo a transformation with several key investments:
Sandals Resorts: Major renovations at their Mediterranean and Caribbean properties will begin on September 30, 2024, with an estimated completion date in October 2026.
Nobu Beach Club, Barbuda: This exclusive project will begin construction in the first quarter of 2025, marking the debut of the prestigious brand in Barbuda.
Marriott Leisure World: A new luxury hotel with 114 rooms and overwater villas in Yeptons is pending approval, promising an exceptional experience for the most discerning travelers.
Nikki Beach and One & Only Halfmoon Bay: With projects already underway, these new world-class resorts are preparing to further solidify Antigua and Barbuda as a luxury destination.
